About the {{offerTypeLabel(offer)}}

Wriggle your way over to The Jam Jar this weekend for the world's first ever chilli con carne cook-off, in honour of St Patrick's Day and in celebration of Mexican and Irish culture in Bristol! Expect live music, a chilli con carne cook-off competition, a homemade hot sauce competition, a chilli pepper eating competition, DJs, a space to watch the rugby, and BYOG (that's bring your own Guinness!) Vegans, don't worry: you're covered too, as there's also going to be plenty of chilli non-carne on the scene too.

  • The monument to independence in Mexico City contains a statue of an Irish man? Who just happened to be the leader of the first Mexican independence rebellion?
  • A man of Irish decent was the last king of New Spain, the country from which Mexico was born?
  • The only group of American soldiers ever to defect and rebel against America were the St Patricks Battalion of of the Republic of Mexico?

What's that you say? You didn’t know any of those commonly understood facts? How shameful! It's time for you to Wriggle your way down to the Jam Jar for a celebration of Irish-Mexican relations and get WOKE, with the worlds first St Patrick's day Chilli Con Carne cook-off! Expect a fun-packed evening of cultural fusion filled with tasty food, competitions, music and interesting facts!

For the chilli con carne competition, you'll be the judge! You will be given a score card, paper cups, and and a serving spoon of at least 10 different meat-based chilis from passionate local chefs, including legendary Bristolian names such as Burger Theory, I Love Hoagies, Voodoo Q and many more. This being Bristol, there also be fierce competition coming from a range of stunning vegan chillis too!

You can also get your inner chef on, too, thanks to a homemade hot sauce competition. Simply bring along a bottle or two of your best homemade chilli sauce to enter the competition! Or if you'd rather, you can simply critique the efforts of others – the reverse of your chilli con/non carne scoring card will be a scoring card for the sauces.

For the hot-heads out there, there's also a chilli pepper eating competition. Maybe you aren’t the biggest chef, but you think you can handle the heat? Maybe you're super competitive and want to win whatever the cost? Either way there will be a traditional chili pepper eating competition, starting out with milder chilis and going up the Scoville scale with each round. The moment you cave and take a sip of your Guinness you forfeit your place and you're gone!

Jam Jar Fundraiser: as many of you may know, the Jam Jar underwent a crowdfunding campaign in December and raised an incredible £16,623. Unfortunately, though, this was still short of the £20,000 target, so this event hopes to raise as much money as possible to help pay for the work needed to keep this cultural gemstone of Bristol alive and get it fully licensed. For your £10 ticket, you will be fed as much chilli con/non carne as you can eat, as well as enjoying the amazing array of other activities and events, and enjoying BYO, too!

About The Jam Jar

The Jam Jar is one of our absolute favourite threads in Bristol's fabulous cultural and creative fabric. A vibrant, independent community arts space and music venue in the heart of Bristol, The Jam Jar is totally volunteer led. It offers a dazzling array of services and platforms, including: a music studio, art studio, open desk spaces, a large creative space which can be used as a performance area (complete with high ceilings and a stage) to a wide range of clients. All of this is accompanied by toilet and kitchen facilities, making The Old Malt House, where The Jam Jar is based, a multi faceted community and creative space. It strives to support and shout about grassroots and independent musical culture and creativity, by developing a space that encourages and enables collaborative work. The Jam Jar also works to encourage a mutual sharing of resources and skills, to create a variety of projects under the same roof. The space itself has been built out of a successful collaboration between multi-skilled individuals, and now hosts an incredible array of new ideas and projects. Head to The Jam Jar and expect to encounter a dazzling array of talented musicians, artists, performers and speakers at their events, as well as fun and interactive workshops, conferences and practical courses. The Jam Jar is now crowdfunding to raise money to keep itself afloat and get fully licensed, amidst tough financial times.
