We visited on a blustery but clear Wednesday lunchtime and had our beautiful sandwiches overlooking the harbour. It was a lovely serene moment in our work days and one we will repeat for sure. The sandwiches were great - ciabatta was not too hard!
About Grain Barge
Wend your way over to Mardyke Wharf, and climb aboard the historical water-borne Bristol icon that is The Grain Barge.
Built in 1936 by the Charles Hill shipyard, Grain Barge began life as a transport barge, shipping barley and wheat from Bristol to Cardiff. The barge is now permanently moored in Hotwells, just across from its original berth, and with breathtaking views across Bristol harbour and the fabulous SS Great Britain, beloved of Bristolians across the city.
Today, this converted barge is a friendly, chilled out place to enjoy some relaxed and damn tasty food and drink with friends and family. Packed full of character, the barge offers absolutely beautiful panoramic views, in a beautifully scenic location. Once you board the Grain Barge, there's a range of spaces to relax: the recently revamped 'Hold Bar' lurks in the belly of the Barge, and provides an intimate, cosy and unique space to enjoy some drinks, whilst discovering some excellent local live music. Elsewhere, the main harbourside lounge and dining area is light & airy, whilst the upper 'al fresco' deck boasts a breathtaking 270 degree view of the harbour.
Quite apart from its incredible location, the food and drink at the Grain Barge is worth a little adventure down to the harbourside. Working to Grain Barge founder George Ferguson's firm conviction that independent businesses are the future and essence of our fair city, the food and drink here is locally and sustainably sourced. Independent brewers are the order of the day, whilst the menu changes seasonally, according to the best produce available from local suppliers. Even the interior of the restored barge was designed and created using reclaimed and recycled materials reflecting Bristol's industrial heritage.
If you're looking for an alternative to the usual weekend pub trip, then look no further. Strap on your sea legs and set sail for the Grain Barge, and enjoy delicious scran, tasty drinks, and divine views.
