Please note: Desi is pretty small and gets really busy, so it's a good idea to call ahead on 01179332889 if you want to book a table for a particular time.

This date night its time to ditch the sofa and Netflix, call bae and tell him/her that you're going on holiday. Together, you're going on a culinary exploraiton to sample the mouthwatering, moreish flavours of India, and it's going to be great. Okay, a disclaimer: you're not actually going on holiday (soz), but you are going to Wriggle on over to Totterdown, where Desi Indian Tapas are cooking up a storm.

With this Wriggle, you and your loved one will be tucking into four of Desi's delectable tapas-style sharing dishes – perfect for diving into together over a few drinks. Choose between the following mouthwatering options:

  • Lamb kofta: lamb mince with a blend of spices and chillies, cooked in the tandoor oven
  • Chicken tandoori: chicken breast marinated and cooked in the traditional oven
  • Fish curry: Asian white fish cooked in a spicy masala sauce, served with a squeeze of lime
  • Dal: delicious and healthy lentils, packed with flavour
  • Chana masala: chickpeas simmered with chillies, onions and spices
  • Chicken curry: mouthwatering chicken in a flavourful sauce that packs a punch
  • Paneer and peas: classic mixed veg samosas served with imlee chutney

It's a good amount of food for two people, but we would strongly recommend ordering a spread of delicious dishes to augment the tapas dishes, and stuff yourselves until you can hardly move. Wriggle particularly recommends Desi's incredible pakoras – crunchy Indian fritters made with potato, spinach and chillies, and served with a glorious homemade dipping sauce.

Please note: Desi is pretty small and gets really busy. Please call ahead on 01179332889 if you want to book a table for a particular time - if they're full and you haven't booked, there may be a small wait.

About Desi Indian Tapas

'Tapas the Indian way'. That's the declaration of a huge, colourful mural on the walls of Desi Indian Tapas, and that's exactly what you should expect from this vibrant, buzzing hubbub of activity and energy on Wells Road. The word 'Desi' itself is derived from Sanskrit, and can be loosely translated as 'one from our country'. The name is an apt one, as you'll see upon walking into this cosy, friendly little spot. Expect a warm and relaxed greeting, and comfy, cosy seats – it's a bit like settling down in the front room of a relative who you haven't seen since you were young. That homely, welcoming feeling only intensifies when you glance around at the colourful decorations adorning Desi's interior: super-colourful wallpaper, masses of framed posters of Bollywood film stars, hanging lights, cosy scatter cushions all add to the sensation that you're in somebody's living room rather than a flouncy, pretentious restaurant. The same is true of the delectable food being cooked up in Desi. The chefs here focus on tantalising Punjabi-style home cooking that's relaxed and informal. Most dishes are prepared in the tandoori oven, meaning that the whole place is flooded with delicious aromas wafting through from the kitchen. From fresh coffee and mithai – Indian sweets – in the morning, through to delicious roti wraps at lunchtime, right into the glorious evening menu of tapas-style sharing dishes, this is food to savour and food to enjoy. At lunchtimes, Desi's excellent playlist (expect a great mix of Bonobo, Floating Points and some atmospheric instrumental bits and bobs) and spacious tables make it a perfect spot to chill out, meet friends, or even to do a bit of work over some delicious and ridiculously good value lunch. On sunnier days there's even a little terrace outside to catch a few rays – close your eyes, savour those heavenly Punjabi flavours, and dream yourself away to warmer climes... The evening menu at Desi is designed for sharing, tapas stylee, so head over there with a bunch of mates, order one of everything off the menu, and get stuck in. Be warned, though, Desi is pretty petite, so you might want to book ahead to avoid disappointment!
