About the {{offerTypeLabel(offer)}}

As part of The Verdict's June showcase of female Jazz singers, Lucy Pickering will be bringing her brilliant Court & Spark to join us.

COURT AND SPARK is a project conceived by Lucy Pickering, to reinterpret and perform some of Joni Mitchell’s finest songs from the 1970’s to 1990’s – the era that saw album releases such as Hejira, Court & Spark and Taming The Tiger. This was the era when Joni Mitchell began to look beyond her folk roots, and worked with Pat Metheny, Jaco Pastorius and Wayne Shorter. Some of her greatest songs come from these fruitful creative partnerships, and many of them make a great starting point for exploration and development; something which we are delighted to be able to share and perform.

In 2016 Court & Spark played at Brighton’s Emporium Theatre Bar, and to a full house at The Verdict Jazz Club in Brighton. Audience responses and reviews were very favourable:

“within the sensitive playing and superb solos from all musicians there is, all-at-once, a sense of respect, fun, seriousness, communication, wit and charm… The audience were both courted and sparked. And we clearly loved it”, Lou Beckerman, Sussex Jazz Mag, December 2016

Lucy Pickering (vocals and piano) has been a professional singer for twenty years. She has sung aboard some of the world’s most prestigious cruise liners, as well as in fringe theatres and music venues around the UK. Since moving to Brighton, Lucy has been regularly seen fronting Retroactive Party Band, the Chris Coull Big Band, various duos, trios and quartets, as well as being a member of Terry Pack’s unfeasibly large musical collective Trees.

Beccy Rork is a saxophonist, teacher and arranger living in East Sussex.
She began playing in Blues, Funk and Soul bands in Norwich, and went on to study Jazz, Popular and Contemporary Music at Leeds College of Music, where she played tenor and alto saxophone, clarinet and flute in a variety of ensembles, from duo to big band and in many different genres. Beccy toured extensively through France during the summer months with the Moliendo Café Trio (double bass, guitar and saxophone), and her melodic style and warm tone have been likened to that of Paul Desmond, Art Pepper and Bud Shank.

As well as your two jazz tickets, you'll also be sipping on a bottle of wine – heavenly!

Doors are at 7pm and the performance starts at 8pm.

About Roxanne @ The Verdict

Roxanne @ The Verdict is one of Team Wriggle's favourite spots in Brighton – an uber-cool jazz club-cum-cafe-bar, serving up tasty food, good vibes, and incredible tunes. If you're looking for a casual bite to eat, the cafe itself is a joy. The menu is short but sweet, much like the owner; with customers favouring the artisan bread sandwiches, smashed avocado or scrambled eggs with chorizo. The home made sweet treats and fresh smoothies also catch the eye and with access to the sunny Dorset Gardens there is no better spot to grab a snack. You can also expect barista made coffee with the wonderful Backyard Coffee beans which are roasted in Ditchling. There's always plenty of veggie and vegan options too, meaning that everybody can get involved. The Jazz Club itself is a beautifully soundproofed, purpose-built auditorium that can comfortably seat 60 people. In residence at this cosy underground venue is an Offenbach piano, bass amp, drum kit and PA, making it a dynamic multi-functional space that's played host to some of the finest jazz musicians in the world. If you're after a fabulous evening of live music, The Verdict is the perfect place for you; it is widely regarded as one of the greatest jazz venues in Europe, by musicians, guests and press – get down there and find out for yourself what all the fuss is about.
