When a box of Lindt and a card simply won’t do, it befalls on us to treat mother to a fantastic meal this Sunday.

Mother’s Day has sprung upon us with daffodils. So where to take her?

We’ve taken it upon us to scour the streets of Cardiff, in pursuit of the most mother-friendly menus. Choose your mother-type, then your menu accordingly.

For sweetheart mum

Beloved by Cathays-dwellers, this cheerful artisan bakery THE EARLY BIRD does a brunch to entice even the fussiest of mothers. A plate of salted caramel French toast served with apple and cinnamon compote should keep her sweet, or there’s ham and spinach brioche with hazelnut pesto for those of a savoury persuasion. Oh, and mum gets a mimosa on the house this Sunday.

For wine-loving mum

Cardiff’s go-to destination for authentic French comfort food, elegant yet homely CHEZ FRANCIS makes an ideal setting for a rendezvous with your best woman. Feast on classics such as onion tarte tartin, veggie cassoulet, and the mother of all puddings, crème brûlée. Oh, and lots of red red red vino.

For first-class mothers

If she’s a fancy fish fiend, then classy little Pontcanna-based FISH AT 85 is just the ticket. Start her off with a glass of bubbly –on the house, of course – then enjoy a 1970s throwback in the form of prawn cocktail, before tucking into grilled lemon sole. She’ll be happy as a clam.

For traditional mum

Head to trendy CAMEO CLUB on Wellfield Road for classic British, home cooking (with a modern touch). Lush slow-roasted Beacons lamb, followed by whiskey and white chocolate bread and butter pudding? That’s a crowd-pleasing menu if we ever saw one.

For adventurous mummy

For High Tea with a twist, pop in to Cardiff’s one and only CHAIHOLICS, an Indian-style teahouse on Wellfield Road. Here, Welsh cakes sit alongside tea-infused sultana scones and chai bites with dips and chutneys on a traditional tiered cake-stand. Combine with a stroll in pretty-as-a-picture Roath Park and that’s your whole afternoon sorted.

For stressed-out mum

If you really want to indulge mum then why not combine lunch with a good ol’ pampering at the spa? THE LAGUNA KITCHEN, next-door to Laguna Health and Spa, offers a menu guaranteed to make her feel radiant. We’re talking bursa figs and Parma ham, followed by beetroot tortellini. But she can't have Mother’s Day without chocolate, you say? Well, it's creamy chocolate profiteroles for pudding.

For mums who likes it hot

Does your mum have a penchant for the local Indian takeaway? Treat her to a meal out at PURPLE POPPADOM and sumptuous nouvelle Indian cuisine by Anand George. A special menu is planned for the occasion, including prawn mango curry and coconut passionfruit panna cotta. It’ll blow her mind and keep the takeaway at bay for a week.

For cute 'n' kitsch mum

Probably Cardiff mothers' number one, PETTIGREW TEA ROOMS has rolled out the stops for Sunday. The usual High Tea spread will have extra oomph; a meringue kiss and spiced berry cordial for starters, before finger sandwiches, rose and pistachio scones, rounded off with a selection of cakes. There’s a special gift for mum, too. Book now, as spaces are bound to fill quickly.
