Fervent foodies of Cardiff, assemble!
There's a new family-run Greek restaurant in town, and it's already making waves with some of Cardiff's best-known food bloggers.
Maria's Greek Taverna is a clean, bright and homely restaurant on Crwys Road, which bears the name of the family's matriarch. And very proud she must be, too, for this place is about as unpretentious and lovely as can be.
Every dish on the menu at Maria's is prepared fresh to order, and all the Greek classics are present; there's hearty fare like moussaka and souvlaki, mezze. Of course, there are also Greek salads bursting with sun ripened olives, juicy tomatoes and tangy feta.
The recipes themselves have all been passed down and perfected through generations and generations of Greeks in Maria's family.
So which dishes do Cardiff's resident food bloggers recommend?
The Plate Licked Clean was particularly taken with Maria's Spanokorisotto. He called it "a soothing bowlful of rice and herbs and spinach which hits all the right notes-salty, rich, oozing, savoury: this is comfort food dialled all the way up to δέκα, all finished with a fruity olive oil."
Meanwhile, Gourmet Gorro raved about the hearty Moussaka; "It combined meaty beef and lamb ragu, uber-tender pieces of potato and aubergine and a good layer of golden-capped bechamel. The whole dish had a lovely background warmth of cinnamon."
As for team Wriggle? We can't get enough of their Halloumi fries, which balance the sweet and the salty with a moreish marinade of honey and mint.
Pining for a holiday but can't quite afford the air-fare? Book yourself in for a sunshine-y meal at Maria's instead - it's just the ticket.
