How do you like the sound of getting a beer concocted by YOU brewed by the legendary Crafty Devil? Then, imagine how cool it would be if that very same beer was being sold in The Grange – one of Cardiff's finest and best respected pubs? Well, you beery beauties, that's the prize – along with a £100 bar tab and a celebratory wall plaque – for whichever lucky champion is crowned Amateur Brewer of the Year in the Grange's inaugural Amateur Brewing Festival.

Sorry, what's happening?

Fantastic local pub The Grange is on the hunt for Cardiff's best home brewers to enter their inaugural Amateur Beer Festival this August. The festival will offer a unique celebration of home brewing, and challenges novice brewers to bring a bottle of their finest home brew along for judging. In exchange for their entry, the winner will watch as all their beery dreams come true. The winning beer will be brewed professionally by Crafty Devil, and then served on tap in the Grange as a special limited edition brew. The brewer who brings the best beer will also enjoy a £100 bar tab to spend at the Grange – together with a shiny plaque in honour of their achievement.

Can I take part?

As long as you're an amateur, then sure – please do! It's fine if you've already had a go at brewing at home – but likewise if you've never dabbled – all amateur brewers are strongly urged to get involved! No brewing equipment? Check out The Grange and I Loves the 'Diff on Twitter – they'll be running competitions to win two sets of brewing equipment including everything you'll need to get your brew on the go – in exchange for a little retweet, share and follow – seems a fair exchange, huh?

Sweet, sounds fun – I want in! When's the festival?

The Amateur Beer Festival will take place on Sunday 26th August. Handily, it's the day before bank holiday Monday – so you'll be able to, ahem, test out the competition, without any fear of an early start the next morning.

How do I enter?

Entering the Amateur Beer Festival is the easy part – simply email grange@wearecowshed.co.uk with your name, contact number, a bit about yourself, and proof that you're aged 18 or over. Simple, right? It's the brewing that's the hard part, after all...

What do I need to bring on the day?

On the day, you'll simply need to bring 70cl (or one bottle) of your home brew. Pease don't bother bringing any more than that – it'll only go to waste so you may as well enjoy it at home! The judges also want to examine the process behind your brewing – so you'll need to provide a recipe and some photos or video footage of the various stages of your brew. The proof will be in the pudding, though, when your beer will be judged by a tough panel of prestigious and experienced experts, including managers of the Grange and the Lansdowne pubs, as well as Crafty Devil's own brewers and a representative from CAMRA (the Campaign for Real Ale).

The boring bits:

  • You must be 18+ to enter, and must show proof of ID
  • All entries must be handcrafted products and made using private equipment by hobbyist brewers (i.e., no use of commercial facilities or Brew on Premises operations, supplies, etc
  • Commercial 'Beer kits' that contain just water and sugar should not be entered
