This quirky little restaurant is paradise for plant eaters and it’s a great place for a date, too. It’s all cosy and twinkly inside and in the summer, you can sit in the garden and watch the sun set. From the meat-free menu you can feast on beer battered halloumi and chips, thali and vegan meatballs – and on Sundays, a nut roast with all the trimmings. After dinner, cwtch up with a cocktail in the yurt.

Like Casanova himself, this restaurant is renowned for its charm. It’s a bit posher than your average pizza place (in fact, you won’t find it on the menu here) so if you want the Italian real deal, you’ve come to the right place. The food is fresh, seasonal and delicious, so get set to impress your date.

Why have tapas when you can have pintxos? This place used to be a Burger King restaurant but spend an evening at Curado Bar and you could almost believe that you’re in the Basque Country. Keep date night cheap and cheerful with a few drinks, some pintxos and a sharing board or splash out on one of the larger plates.

If you’re feeling flush, treat your date to a meal at Restaurant James Sommerin. This Michelin starred restaurant overlooks Penarth seafront and the food’s as beautiful as the view. Cheap it ain’t but this is fine dining at its very best and worth every penny. Push the boat out and try the tasting menu then stay in one of the rooms upstairs.

For a bit of ooh la la, take your other half to this bijoux bistro, which is a short walk from the city centre. The décor is as charmingly Gallic as its menu and you can enjoy some of the best boeuf bourgignon in town. There are some great dinner deals, too, so it’s ideal if you want to wine and dine on a budget.

It’s one of Jay Rayner’s favourite Cardiff restaurants and pretty much everyone else agrees. The Potted Pig is often booked up weeks in advance so if you can get a table, you’ll automatically win brownie points with your date. Prepare to pig out (literally – the restaurant’s famed for its suckling pig) and if the food isn’t enough to impress, you can also enjoy a drink or three from the extensive gin vault.
Where: 27 High Street, Cardiff CF10 1PU
This little gem of a restaurant is a Cardiff institution and owner Russell is just as popular as his menu. Boy, are you in for a treat if you come here for date night. The restaurant itself is an Instagrammer’s paradise and that’s before you even get to the food which is hearty and heavenly (think Welsh with a French twist) and can be washed down with something from the extensive wine list.
Where: 5 Romilly Crescent, Pontcanna, Cardiff CF11 9NP
This tiny little restaurant is tucked away on Church Street but it regularly tops the Trip Advisor lists for its relaxed and rustic charm – and its perfect pizza and pasta. Café Citta is cute and cosy so it’s popular with lovebirds, plus it’s cheap so you can offer to pay the bill knowing that you won’t break the bank.

If you want fine wine and food, you’ve come to the right place. Park House is perfect for a bit of posh.
