2017 is set to be a bumper year for openings, with Cargo 2 flinging its doors open and expansion being announced. Long time chefs finally able to open their own places and serial pop ups settling down to bricks and mortar, we are spoiled for choice in Bristol. We have picked a few of our favourite places to open in the last month or so, and look forward to adding more!
Wholesome, welcoming and a long time coming are a few words and phrases that can describe new opening Bomboloni. The Griffins have finally been given the opportunity to open their own place after the chefs in the family, Dad Andrew and daughter Molly, have spent a few years doing the rounds in Bristol kitchens. Now set up on Gloucester Road they are serving homely Italian food to the Bishopston masses. You will find pizza, pasta, great wine and of course the namesake "Bomboloni, a small, light donuts with various fillings. Delicious!
Larger than life Carol Whitworth was expected as a child to dress the crabs her father bought home on Sundays and couldn't look at them for years. Luckily for Bristol after a trip to the USA where she sat down to a fantastic crab boil she wanted to bring the action back home and has teamed up with The Old Butchers to do just that. Serving soft shell crab burgers, crab cakes incredible wings and a whole host of other crabby things, you could almost pretend you were by the sea side.
This is not just another burger place... Lucien Gordon of Patty and Bun fame in London has come back to Bristol and opened on Park Row. Heavy on the Bristol and South American influence, he is serving those burgers pink & juicy, using organic, high welfare beef and topped with West Country cheese. The patties are cooked on a proper asado, a wood fired grill for that sought after, char grilled taste. Veggies are catered for too, check out their buttermilk fried pepper burger, it's something different!
As a delicious added treat, they make their own habanero hot sauce and mayo in house and my goodness it's packed with flavour. We tried to get the recipe out of Lucien but he wasn't budging.
The Pickled Brisket is brought to you by husband and wife team Robin and Flora, who provide Bristol's finest salt-beef at street food markets, popup kitchens and now their own space at Wapping Wharf. They sell a selection of hot salt beef sandwiches or platters made from 100% native breeds farmed in the Somerset Levels including their famous Reuben with blow torched Swiss Cheese.
Gopal's have been a central part of the Bristol streetfood scene for years - serving up the most amazing vegetarian and vegan Indian cuisine. It's vibrant, fresh, aromatic and seasonal food that's lovingly prepared - and served up by the lovely Heather and Mel. Now with a permanent home at Cargo, crowd sourced with our help, you can grab your veggie thali fix whenever you like!
Taking over the Halo site on Gloucester Road, Industry Bar and Kitchen have thrown open the front windows to the public. With a decent beer selection both on tap and in the fridge, great wine (we love the pinot noir) and a food menu that gets us a bit excited we think brothers Ronnie and Nathan will be hitting the ground running.
We have mentioned a few of our faves who have got themselves some (almost) bricks and mortar action at Cargo 2 but we feel the entire development needs a mention as a whole. Follow the link to see who is popping up and why you should be heading down there ASAP.
We've been waiting six months for Coffee + Beer to open and thank goodness we weren't disappointed. A lovely stripped back cafe cum bottle shop, it fits in perfectly with the Cotham Hill vibes. Currently and off license, you are encouraged to stock up on specialty coffee and craft beers to enjoy at home. Dan Williams, the owner who started his retail life in Oxford, wants people to bring in growlers to fill from his taps and loves that people will get to try before they buy instead of taking a punt on something. Head over for something new and exciting to drink.
Opened by two friends with a passion for games, Replay is the latest arrival on the buzzing Gloucester Road. It's a bar with a tip-top selection of board-games as well as a table-tennis.
They've got big plans as well - with an Escape Room on the way and a Vegetarian menu coming soon. In the meantime, they've got a selection of snacks (Fries, Onion Rings, Crisps) and a selection of beers - along with a lovely relaxed atmosphere to settle down to a game or two.
Continuing with a successful creep through the South West, Hubbox have taken over the old Las Iguanas site on Whiteladies Road and are offering their Cornish take on the staple of burgers, hot-dogs, mac and cheese and loaded fries. Wash it ll down with some craft beer and you got yourself a party!
