Just like this cracking tavern’s frothy namesake, when it comes to the Fountain Head we can’t stop gushing. A well-proportioned town centre boozer with a solid selection of local beer on tap and a quietly ecumenical flavour to the decor. Plus board games, books and a dog friendly vibe. It might not have outside space, but it does have big windows and is south-facing. Staff are always up for a chat. There’s couches, and tables of all sizes. As for food, the Sunday roast is justly lauded, but the scotch eggs are also a bit special, alongside your standard complement of burgers and smaller sides. Triple cooked chips, too. Whet your appetite yet?

Hells Kitchen is a deli with a difference. Since opening in 1951, this New York-style eatery has been delighting Brightonians with its huge array of “saintly salads” and “mean munches”. There’s no such thing as a small portion at this deli. Go for the seven deadly sins of sandwiches and you’ll be full all day - a particular delight being the Sloth, which is a bacon, peppered-tomato, avocado, rocket and pesto filling in a choice of homemade breads. Hells Kitchen classics The Wrestler, Chairman Mao, Deadly Deb and Paradise Joe are all oozing with mouth-watering ingredients: shredded duck, salt beef, peppered salami and of course, dill pickle and American mustard. For a larger lunch the Mac & Cheese is a must - covered in a decadently cheesy sauce and accompanied by a delicious fresh salad. With food like this, it’s no wonder they’ve been around for over six decades!

Somehow each time we leave Foodilic we feel half a stone lighter and five years younger. Not from a lack of food; pile your plate high with rich verdant haricots, glistening roast veg, tartly seasoned cous-cous, hunky portions of marinated roast chicken and much more. Pair with healthy juice (carrot is good) for optimal smug points. Helpful, smiley and outrageously fit staff know everything about everything. Even the seating choices are zen; ground floor to scoff your five-a-day lording it over traffic-choked North Street, upstairs for more of a chillaxed Amsterdam hippy-hostel vibe. There’s even a bamboo-lined roof terrace when the weather behaves, with nice plump benches and conspiratorial booths. Good in so many ways.
