Lavash is a traditional Middle Eastern flatbread with a chewy yet crisp texture, typically served with dips. It’s also, coincidentally, the name of our new favourite purveyor of Middle Eastern-style wraps, tucked away in the North Laines. All of the wraps come with rocket, red cabbage and fresh onion, and make for a properly satisfying, filling early dinner. – ideal for grabbing on the way home from work or uni when you can't be bothered to cook but are in need of something nourishing and delicious.

Anyone who's walked along Gardner Street in recent years will recognise the heavenly array of salads of display in the window. All of the delicious salads on offer are veggie (most are actually vegan, too), and lots are gluten free as well. Nothing quite says "treat yo' self" than a cream tea, but we don't always like to share. Metrodeco therefore serve their teas for one, no scrambling for the last of the teapot here! A firm Wriggle favourite here. Pick up either a whole falafel pitta from the friendly bunch at Smorl's or a Houmous Salad Box, both packed with fresh houmous, falafel and salad goodness. The whole freshly baked pitta pocket is lined with Smorl’s Original Houmous, filled with Smorl’s freshly fried falafel (2), green salad and chive, crunchy pickled cabbage, fresh vine tomato, almond tapenade, coconut chutney vegan yoghurt, tahini and lemon dressing, chilli and lime dressing, finished with organic tamari sunflower seeds. The falafel & houmous salad is made up of Smorl’s freshly fried Falafels (2) and Smorl’s Original Houmous surrounded by green salad and chive, beetroot and carrot slaw, pearl barley and cashew tabbouleh, quinoa and puy lentil grain, roast Mediterranean vegetables, cinnamon squash, almond tapenade, beetroot caviar, roast cauliflower hazelnut & pomegranate salad, mint and cucumber tzatziki, tahini and lemon dressing, chilli and lime dressing, finished with organic tamari sunflower seeds.


It may be getting colder, but the lovely folk at Cafe Trafe have a knack for putting the warmth back into your belly. Grab this soup-er Wriggle and get down to Trafalgar street - you'll soon have a warming bowl of fresh soup between your hands, and (very importantly) some white or granary bread for dipping! Cafe Trafe's Soup of the Day changes (yep, you guessed it) every day, so you'll find out exactly what you'll be tucking into when you're there. Past soup-er stars include their hot pink soup - a blend of beetroot, potato, and spices finished with a wicked chilli bite, crunchy croutons and a whirl of fresh yoghurt. We also love their tomato and basil soup with herby polenta dumplings. That these guys get creative is an understatement. So sit, relax, grab one of their superb coffees, and watch the world go by.

This tasty little rice dish comes with a base of warm white rice and fresh, regularly changing toppings. Some of the toppers you can expect are carrots, red cabbage, soybean sprouts, mushroom, beetroot and peppers. The dish includes sesame oil, gluten-free soy sauce and gochujang chilli paste. With this Wriggle, you'll choose one of the Fountain Head's special sarnies – big, beautiful and packed to bursting with delicious, seasonal fillings, these sarnies are not to be trifled with. Mrs Fitz's Food serves up some seriously delish dishes - from flatbread pizzas, to burgers & hot dogs and loaded fries - and these make a great companion to any bev off off Mrs Fitzherbert's very extensive drinks menu. Behind the rustic hand-carved wooden doors of Cafe Rust lies your next lunchtime Wriggle. For just a fiver, you'll be treated to a sandwich of your choice and either a can of coke or a bottle of still/sparking water. Their sandwich options change regularly, but a recent Wriggle favourite was the BBQ chicken and mozzarella, with streaky bacon, mixed leaf salad, tomato and mayo. For veggies, expect something along the lines of avocado and halloumi, with tomato and chilli jam on fresh or toasted sourdough. Takeaway only. If you haven't ventured to Cafe Rust before, you're in for a treat - these lovely folk take a classic yet daring approach to their culinary creations. Trust us, these guys bring their A-game and it certainly shows - this hidden gem has attracted quite a cult following of Brighton residents and visitors alike. P.S. Ask Cafe Rust's lovely team about their secret cellar - down these stone steps is a cosy, cavernous space, perfect to rent for private events.
