Wriggle’s favourite café and wine bar is also an independent bookshop tucked away in an old Victorian Hotel in Cardiff Bay’s historic quarter, which turns its pages in the same building as renowned independent publishing company Accent Press. Octavo’s is popular with office workers, theatre goers and writers thanks to its relaxed atmosphere and friendly staff and eye-wateringly tasty food.
The menu offers big portions of cawl, curry, pizzas and burgers, plus antipasti platters and homemade cakes. There’s plenty on offer for vegetarians and vegans, a selection of daily specials and - if you're after something naughty but nice - gourmet chip buckets topped with herbs and spices.
This literary lounge is the perfect hideaway for a spot of reading and writing (try cosying up to the plush own and dragon cushions on one of the squidy sofas), a casual business meeting or even after work drinks. It's also open late for book groups, wine tasting and quiz nights, and develops a distinctly bohemian vibe as day gradually turns into night (you don't get that at Waterstones!).
The books cover a range of genres with top titles selected by the knowledgeable staff, and you can order in anything not found on the shelves. There are regular author events and even store-time sessions for babies and toddlers. Definitely worth a visit.
