If you live in Cardiff, you haven’t tasted a sandwich until you’ve tried a hoagie from New York Deli. Tucked away in Cardiff’s High Street Arcade, this quirky little deli has been bringing a taste of New York to Cardiff’s sandwich scene for over 25 years.
So, what exactly is a hoagie? A ‘hoagie’ is a Philadelphian long sub sandwich packed with lip-smacking meats, cheeses, vegetables and dressings. It’s thought the term originated from Hog Island In the 20th century, where citizens referred to each other as Hogans, and ate ‘hoggies’; large Philadelphian loaves stuffed with meats.
Although hoagies steal the limelight at New York Deli, the sandwich shop also serves traditional sandwiches, bagels, hot dogs, soups and salads. We can’t imagine ordering anything order than a hoagie, though!
