Why we love it

Mouthwatering ingredients, vibrant flavours, regional authenticity and contemporary street-food-style combine so convincingly at Jalan Malaysia that lovers of proper pan-Asian cuisine will be forgiven for thinking they've died and gone to Langkawi (Welsh accents, a prime Woodville Rd spot or an idiosyncratic Cathays crowd aside, of course).

The restaurant's frontage - clad in corrugated iron, shimmering under neon lighting and pieced together with an industrial wooden sleeper - definitely looks the part (especially as night draws in), and a subtle interior mix of crisp white walls, minimalist metal & wood ceiling, low-hanging filament lightbulbs and pen-and-ink wall murals emphasise this popular hideaway's "street" ambience.

Trays lined with banana leaves, "little cravings" (tasty titbits served in brown card) and some knockout sauces and sides help set the scene, but, happily for foodies, it's the Nasi Lemak – Malaysia's most popular dish, a street food staple and the indulgent focal point of Jalan Malaysia's entire menu – that does the talking. Those partial to a proper Rendang or traditional Sambal flavouring definitely won't be disappointed after an evening here.

Musings, murals and quotes - the interior wall art is a reason to visit in itself

Delicious food and great service!

Very tasty food, great prices and lovely helpful friendly service. Highly reccomend.

Unfortunately the prawn Nasi Lemak is not included in the Wriggle deal, though it is in their lunchtime deal. Slightly disappointed, but the tofu was great.

Lovely food, friendly staff, would go again!

Delicious, authentic Malaysian food which can easily be vegan as well! Especially good if you like a bit of spice.

I am Malaysian and I had the beef rendang with nasi lemak. The beef rendang was not what I expected. It was tough and overcooked, unlike the tender meat I would expect back home. The nasi lemak also came with a less than generous service of nuts and anchovies, when the nasi lemak dish is distinct BECAUSE of the ample anchovies and nuts which give flavour to the rice. Could barely taste any coconut in the rice, there was no flavour in it. The egg was mediocre, it was not completely hard boiled. So many aspects of the dish did not meet up to the optimum standard of a proper nasi lemak. Disappointing.
