Loved by the young and young-at-heart for a warm welcome, friendly service, and lots of home-cooked treats, Coffee Heaven is a city-centre sweet-spot for comfort food, old-school classics and a lovely cuppa.
Occupying one of St Mary's Street's most central spots (its modest spread of wooden piazza tables - usually spruced with flecks of flowery colour - provide an admirable counterpoint to the noisy marketing bravado of an adjacent multinational hamburger chain...), this neighbourhood café has refreshingly resisted all temptation to join the "mood-lit filament-light" brigade.
Favouring a low-key aesthetic of colourful blackboards set against wall-mounted grey scale pictures of the good old days in Cardiff, it's clear that Coffee Heaven's efforts have been well-channelled towards the things that'll make you want to return after your first visit: tasty savouries, naughty cakes (full of unique flavour and hand-made by owner David - try the yoghurt and blueberry and you'll see what we mean) and a noticeable drive to provide customers of all ages with a quality service - the sort you wouldn't expect to find next door.
They've only been open a relatively short time in the grand scheme of St Mary's Street, but - despite the lack of flashy mod-cons - their loyal following of locals and the steady stream of visitors speaks volumes about David and his Coffee Heaven team. Find a table, rest a while and expect a lunch offering packed with wholesome curries, hearty sarnies and fabulous afternoon teas - along with mightily creamy hot chocolates and monstrous milk shakes. You'll soon join the list of hungry customers made happy within these welcoming walls.
