Patron Francis Dupuy made his name in Cardiff’s food scene in the 90s with Le Gallois. He followed up with the mightily successful Pier 64 and has since set about cementing his stellar reputation with a close-to-home labour of amour gastronomique: Chez Francis. In partnership with his son, Ifan, Francis has now brought CF to Penarth after soaking up the critics' plaudits (and the locals' love) in downtown Canton.
The food here is unapologetically French with bold, rich flavours dominating the menu. All the classics are present: from escargots, cassoulet, confit de canard and coq au vin to clafoutis and tarte aux citron. The cooking is from the heart, and everything tastes exactly how classic French food should.
With delightfully friendly service to boot, each and every visit to Chez Francis feels like a personal invitation to share in Francis and Ifan's hazy gastro memories. Expect quality cuisine, quality wine and quality conversation served with poise, passion and enigmatic flair by Cardiff's favourite father and son Frenchies.
