Being the baby of one of Cardiff’s best independent Indian restaurants, Mint and Mustard, Chai Street was always bound for success. The restaurant hasn’t even celebrated its second birthday yet, but it recently debuted in the Michelin Guide 2016 and underwent an expansion to make way for 20 extra covers.
While Mint and Mustard serves up perfectly presented fine dining cuisine, Canton-based Chai Street focuses on Indian street food, simply done. Think tantalising thalis, ravishing roti wraps and carefully concocted curries, all washed down with a hot cup of chai tea or Indian lager, Cobra.
Inside, Bollywood movie posters plastered over brightly coloured walls and upcycled wood help to give Chai Street that edgy street feel. With a relaxed, casual atmosphere, there’s no need to book – just turn up and tuck in!
“Indian cuisine is based on finding the perfect balance of 6 essential flavours – sweet, salt, bitter, sour, astringent and spicy – and a good Thali brings all these together on one plate. We select dishes daily for our Thalis, often picking our spice palate based on how hot or cold it is outside.”
