Why we love it

A proper pub. Family and dog-friendly, offering a warm welcome, great beer, real ale, fine wine and homemade locally-sourced good food.

Dating back to the 17th century, the Volunteer Tavern is tucked away amongst the trees near Cabot Circus – just far enough from the hustle and bustle of City life – and has the well-kept secret of a large, walled garden. Inside is small but perfectly formed and panelled. Whether you’re after Sunday roast, a working lunch, dinner with friends – or just a drink and a chat – they’ll sort you out. And you might just bump into Treacle, the pub dog, and her two puppies.

Wriggle Highlights

We've only gone and brewed ourselves a beer, and we couldn't be more excited! It's a Pale Ale brewed with Cardiff's fantastic Crafty Devil brewery. This beer is hoppy, citrusy and extremely sessionable - and it can be found in a selection of Bristol's finest pubs, including the Robin Hood, Small Bar, the Beer Emporium, Christmas Steps, the Volunteer Tavern and the Crofters Rights.
