Tsukemono have popped up at The Volunteer Tavern (one of Wriggle's favourite back-street boozers, no less) to bring their unique twist on stunningly contemporary Japanese street food to the urban-leafed backend of St Matthias' Park.
Pleasurable on the palate, soothing on the soul and inspired by extensive stints of misty-eyed journeying across the length and breadth of Japan (where owners Iris and Adam fell immediately in love with the region's culinary culture), Tsukemono promises those adventurous enough to venture a few minutes east of Cabot Circus an epically appetising fusion of the orient's favourite dishes - served in a properly pub-friendly manner.
Instead of Sushi, think entire rainbows of vibrantly jarred pickles, incredible Okonomiyaki, enough vibrant edamame beans, pink lotus root and soy shitake to make you an overnight insta-hero and some of the best Katsu-Kare-Don in Bristol (we're talking tender meat encased in crispy panko crumbs, resting on a bed of sticky rice and doused in the most irresistible, umami-toned Japanese curry sauce).
I’ve had more than a few of of these japanese dishes since they’ve been at the Volly. Always delicious and even better when there’s a wriggle deal going. Will be sad to see them go!
Good selection of beers at the pub. Food was good, the seitan was some of the best I’ve had.
Food was delicious, and came very quickly. One of the best Katsu curries I've ever had - wouldn't have known it was vegan!
