A refreshingly indie opening at the heart of the Harbourside, Rod & Ruby's is a café inspired by Naples, with Bristol at its core and with the very best of Italian terroir and hospitality firmly at its heart.
If you've ever been to Italy, you'll know that their coffee is as vibrant and wide-ranging as it is palpitation-inducingly powerful. Whilst owners Emily and Lorenzo appreciate that – to start with at least – they'll probably have to tone down the caffeinated stallions sent galloping from their Napolita-pedigree coffee machine to ease our flat-white-loving Bristolian palettes into a more continental café culture, they're not planning on reducing their marvellous array of coffee any time soon.
From affogato al caffe' to syrup infused espresso toscano, it's all here – and, much like everything at Rod & Ruby's, it's all a real treat.
As much produce as possible is sourced from the owners' native Italy – think ham from Verona, Pecorino from Roma and Salami from Tuscany. The cheese and bread is also painstakingly selected and imported from artisan suppliers, so you can be sure that when you sink your teeth into their Foccacia Genovese it'll be the real deal.
For the morning, you'll enjoy Italian pastries and a freshly-ground aroma. For lunch, fresh Italian salads laden with the likes of pecorino, salami, mortadella jostle with Panino Milanese for the attention of hungry Hargreaves-Lansdown or Parmenion office workers. As is the case throughout Italy, a powerful coffee is readily available throughout the day – just make sure make sure you're hanging onto something when you try it!.
As for the cafe itself, expect a sleek, curved space – brimming with clean lines and angular interior design. The whole design has been lovingly crafted by Emily and Lorenzo (the amazing café-bar was imagined from scratch on their laptops before being commissioned), and everything is liberally bathed with light from morning until late thanks to the wall-to-ceiling windows.
Rod & Ruby's have been quite vociferous in wanting to create a warm, open and – above all – safe space for everyone, and quite rightly so. Here, everybody is welcomed with open arms for who they are and encouraged to just "be". From the calm, minimalist, modern aesthetic to the vibe and ethos, we love it.
