We've said it before and we'll say it again: appearances can be deceiving, and delicious, exciting food can be found in the most unlikely of places. Such is the case with Bikkle Island, a heavenly haven of exquisite Caribbean food, tucked away inside The Castle Galleries, of all places. Sandwiched between the usual brigade of big-name bakery chains and opposite the Post Office, Bikkle Island is a welcome beacon of bold colours and mouthwatering smells.
This is the second venue for the Bikkle Island team, who first made a splash on the Bristol food scene with their Stapleton Road premises. Here, the gang quickly earned a stellar reputation for their vibrant, reasonably priced and totally delicious Caribbean fast food. With their bold flavours and a plentiful array of filling and varied options, it's no wonder Bikkle Island have grown in popularity so much that they've now expanded into their second venue at Castle Galleries. Here, the menu is small but perfectly formed. Painted on black boards behind the counter, expect a couple of kinds of rice (usually one plain, one rice and peas), some colourful spiced vegetables, and the main event: drool-inducing trays filled with juicy, spicy meats, curries and fish dishes. The typical selection includes jerk chicken, curried goat, fish and oxtail, but this changes from day to day.
The portions are massive and the vibes are good, with ample space to eat in at long tables and reggae music drifting from the speakers, making Bikkle Island the perfect spot to grab a quick and moreish lunch-on-the-go.
