Yorks on Stephenson street isn’t regarded as one of the coolest spots in the city centre for nothing. The building alone is enough to impress with its pointed narrow architecture, large street-facing windows and red brick facade. But to truly understand why Yorks is a proper gem in Birmingham’s treasure chest of food joints, you’re going to want to step in, find a seat and get your mitts on the menu.
At Yorks, the aim of the game is all-day dining, with the menu starting at early bites and winding up with plates that’ll see you into the early evening. We go here for their award-winning brunch, which is always packed full of surprises. We’re talking buttermilk fried chicken with waffles and maple syrup, Arabian buttered eggs, and creamy za’atar roasted mushrooms on toasted sourdough, alongside classic fry-ups and smashed avocado options. In the afternoon, flatbreads and small plates (try the Turkish beef kebab) take over until closing time providing small bites to accompany a hot drink or cheeky craft beer. The whole menu is a real tour de force, and we must admit that in can be difficult to decide what we fancy - but don’t feel intimidated; everything is cracking so you can’t put a foot wrong.
But it’s not just the food that lures people to the sharp corner of Stephenson Street - it’s also Yorks’ coffee. And that’s all thanks to their in-house coffee roaster located at the back of the cafe. Their very own Probat roaster is a valuable member of the team and gives punters a front-row seat to seeing the roasting process, as well as to sample freshly roasted coffee on location. For Yorks, having their own roaster means that they’re not just another member of the coffee scene, but rather a proud part of the industry side of things. They work closely with green bean importers to secure some of the best and most interesting beans on the market to give customers the best coffee experience available. As a result, the flavour profiles of their coffee is always changing, with different espresso and filter coffees to choose from.
Yorks has undoubtedly cemented itself as an institution in Birmingham that never fails to impress.
