Tucked underneath the railway track a stone’s throw from Birmingham Moor Street Station, you’ll find a gang of self-confessed patty pimps and purveyors of filth turning out some of this fine city’s best burgers.
The Original Patty Men have been holding up Birmingham’s burger scene since their inception way back in 2013, beginning as a street food movement (bagging the 2014 British St. Food’s Best Burger award) before settling into their home on Shaw’s Passage. It’s been a remarkable journey, with their menu evolving every step of the way to showcase better and better produce, flavour combinations and experimental toppings. And now, we think they’re at the top of their game.
When it comes to their burgers, you’re in for a treat. To start, there’s the beef options: three burgers with aged longhorn beef patties, finished with range of toppings (the Cheezy-E, for example, is ladened with fresh white onion, American cheese, lettuce, thick cut pickle & Boss Man sauce). The beef itself is cooked to ensure its levels of juiciness are set to maximum; give the burger a squeeze and witness its tender juices ooze from the patty and mix with the crisp salad kicking back beneath it. There’s also the Alabama Slammer (deep fried boneless chicken thigh, served with lime and ginger slaw and a choice of two sauces) for chicken lovers, and the mighty Po Money Po Mushrooms (Po boy style breaded mushrooms, lettuce, pickle cajun Boss Man sauce) for meat-free enjoyment.
On Wednesdays, the Original Patty Men turn their food joint into a wings only affair, dedicating their menu 100% to all things wings. Expect to find buffalo, BBQ, Gochujang, and Alabama chicken wings available, as well as their vegan-friendly cauli wings made with coconut milk.
You’re going to want to go in on the sides too. To accompany your burger, you’ve got to get the O.D.B fries - triple cooked skin on fries with O.D.B spice mix, creamy house slaw with coriander and lime, sriracha mayo, crispy fried onions & fresh spring onion. And don’t get us started on those smokey slow-cooked beans with bacon! In fact, you’ll probably want to get a little bit of everything - so why don’t you? Bring your mates and grab anything that takes your fancy - you won’t regret it.
When all is said and done, there are worse things you could do than join the cult of the Original Patty Men (they even sell quality merch if you want to show your allegiance). A warm welcome, banging burgers and a strong list of those all important side dishes, this is one unforgettable hangout.
