Medicine started back in 2011, when husband and wife duo Simon and Francesca reinvented themselves as bakers and set up a small, rural bakery-slash-deli-slash-cafe in Codsall, Wolverhampton. After spending a couple years honing their skills (inspired by New York and French baking traditions) and building connections with local producers, Simon and Francesca discovered a vacant space on Birmingham’s prominent New Street - and soon enough, Birmingham’s very own Medicine Bakery & Gallery was born.
Formerly home to the Royal Society of Birmingham Artists, Simon and Francesca have restored the Victorian building to its former glory with their buzzy bakery and vibrant gallery space. It’s a stunning spot: hidden behind two large wooden doors adorned with brass rosettes, you’ll find Medicine’s counter-top, displaying an array of freshly baked sweet and savoury goods. Take the stairs, and you’ll come to their cafe seating area; a small boxy room with metal chairs and simple tables. Beyond this, there’s even more seating in the gallery space, which is set in a high arched-ceilinged room that bathes in light from curved rooftop windows; local artwork is set on each and every wall, combining art, coffee and food perfectly. The whole restoration is exceptional and pays tribute to the fine heritage and architectural prowess of the building and its location.
When it comes to the food, Medicine specialises in all day eats that heavily feature their in-house baked goods. We like to go here for brunch (with a vegan option offering scrambled tofu instead of eggs) which comes with a slice of their famous sourdough toast. And for lunch, you’d be a fool not to stop by for a golden three cheese (monterey jack, red leicester and mozzarella) toastie.
But it’s not all about eating in. As a working bakery, Medicine should be your go to for your daily loaf of bread. There’s always something different to choose from to liven up your home-made sandwiches or toast addiction. They’ve got plenty of sweet treats to takeaway too (get some cronuts) so you can impress your workmates when you whip out a cake to pair with your afternoon coffee break.
Medicine is the bakery you’ve always dreamt of.
