If you find yourself sipping late-night cocktails beside the Empire State Building, don’t be alarmed - you probably haven’t caught a drunk flight to New York City. More likely, you’ll find yourself at Manhattan Ave., a New York style cocktail bar hidden down Lower Severn Street in the heart of Birmingham. Opening its doors in 2008, Manhattan Ave. is a relatively new contender in the Birmingham cocktail scene, but it’s already been turning heads due to its punchy look, strong cocktails and lively jazz nights.
Step inside Manhattan Ave. and the hand-painted New York City skyline will remind you you’re not in Kansas anymore. Amongst this setting, there’s also a laidback industrial vibe with exposed breezeblocks, tin lamp shades and rough wooden tables. On regular night, bands perform at the front (visible through the windows from Lower Severn Street) filling the space with jazz and Americana. It’s a cool hangout, that’s pulled out all the stops to create a unique atmosphere to pair with its cocktails.
When it comes to cocktails, Manhattan Ave. team know that keeping it classic and classy is always a good thing. Their menu boasts all of the favourites, from cosmopolitans and Long Island Iced Teas, to the house pick - the Manhattan. We’re particular fans of the “Only After Dark” (a dark chocolate twist on a Espresso Martini) and “Wray of Light” (made with Wray & Nephew overproof rum). It’s a quality line-up, made with passion by their dedicated in-house bartender team.
Every now and again, there’s a few special events worth checking out at Manhattan Ave. A few weeks before writing this, we swung by for a K-Pop inspired evening - the perfect mix of K-Pop songs and vibrant cocktails paired with the music. If you want to see what else they’ve got in store, be sure to stop by their Facebook team.
Manhattan Ave. is a well-received member of the cocktail scene, and the team master all of your favourites. Next time cocktails are in order, stop by.
