Why we love it

These days, it can be tricky to find a food joint that served genuine food inspired by French cuisine. Watered down by chains, it’s not ridiculous to jump to the conclusion that local French restaurants and cafés have all but vanished. But head down Alcester Road into the heart of Moseley, and you’ll realise that this scene is alive and well, in the guise of Maison Mayci.

Since 2005, the award-winning Maison Mayci has been a leading player in Birmingham’s French cuisine scene. Owners (and brothers) David and Rémi started the venture as a way of sharing an authentic, honest and high-quality French café experience with people who live in and around the city. To start the day, they offer a variety of breakfasts ranging from a light oeufs a la coque, to hearty full-English plates and American pancakes. At lunch, the menu is a bountiful selection of meat and fish platters, sandwiches (order the ‘Merguez’: pan fried spicy beef and lamb sausages with roasted vegetables harissa), and a selection of crisp salads.

The quality of Maison Mayci’s ingredients is a big part of its success. David and Rémi serve freshly roasted coffee imported from their home-town in Grenoble, resulting in brews unfound elsewhere in Birmingham. Their baked goods (including bread, pastries, tarts and cakes) are made by an in-house team of trained bakers each and everyday, ensuring they’re fresh, well textured and full of flavour.

But it’s not all about daytime eats - it’s worth noting that Maison Mayci is open until 10pm on Fridays and Saturday. From 6pm, their team of chefs pull out all the stops to create an exquisite evening menu, including dishes such as entrecôte grillé (chargrilled 10z steak), and poulet aux écrevisses (chicken breast and leg cooked in a crayfish sauce - our personal favourite). There’s even cuisses de grenouilles on the starter menu - sautéed frogs legs with garlic lemon and parsley. We recommend arriving hungry and getting stuck into their two or three course tasting menu if you want to experience every joyful morsel the Maison Mayci team have on offer.

Maison Mayci is doing something completely unique, and as a result, it has established itself as a must-visit destination in a fiercely competitive food and drink scene. For a truly genuine taste of French cuisine, this is the spot for you. Bon appétit.

P.S. If you live in Kings Heath, you don’t have to miss out. Maison Mayci’s have also Poplar Rd which replicates everything that’s good about their Kings Heath venue.
