On the ground-floor of a quintessentially Victoria building (dated 1898) situated at the corner of Mayvale Rd and Linden Rd, you’ll find the magnificent Leverton & Halls - an independent deli, cafe and shop that’s become an institution for locals and workers in the Bournville area.
Owned by Dee and Paul, Leverton & Halls specialising in local and organic produce. In fact, it was Dee’s passion for organic produce that inspired a series of events that lead to the creation of Leverton & Halls in 2004. In 1997, she launched a veg box scheme to give parents easy access to fresh, seasonal and organic produce. A year later, she opened her first food shop in Harborne as an expansion of this idea, before moving to Bournville and getting Leverton & Halls off the ground. It’s a brilliant story that’s given Dee a wide knowledge of quality producers, flavour profiles and recipes that’s made Leverton & Halls the brilliant spot it is.
In the cafe, Leverton & Halls offer all sorts, from hearty breakfasts with sausages and bacon from local farms, to seasonal salads and soups that are freshly prepared right in time for lunch. There’s usually a few specials on offer too, including things such as homemade lasagne and aubergine burgers with locally sourced goats cheese. And they don’t scrimp on the sweet treats either; there’s always a cake or two up for grabs to accompany a cup of coffee!
The team behind Leverton & Halls have also put in loads of time to create an amazing secret garden with hanging baskets and stunning wild flowers springing from every space possible. It started as a secret spot that locals cherished, but somehow word got out and now its a hotspot of food and drink delights throughout the sunnier months. Growing popularity aside, the garden still offers a place of solitude that feels worlds away from busy city life.
Leverton & Halls have brought a pinch of rural England to the heart of Birmingham with their seasonal eats and passion for promoting independent producers.
