Why we love it

Merging a passion for gin, craft beer and urban legends, The Jekyll & Hyde is the promised lands for a good time.

True to the Gothic novella, the Jekyll & Hyde has two sides to it, each with a different story to tell. On the ground floor you’ll find Mr Hyde’s Hostelry that serves “intoxicating liquors and restorative elixirs” in the form of a bountiful cocktail selection. The menu is imaginative and plentiful, starting with cocktails inspired by Victorian confectionary (order the “rhubarb & custard”), to sinister sirums (the “Mischief Maker” with Makers Mark whiskey, butterscotch syrup, espresso, chocolate bitters is our favourite here), showcasing a range of flavour notes and creative serving methods. There’s also some ridiculously clever sharing cocktails - one served in a teapot, one served in a watering can, and one served in a bathtub. Is there an end to their curious imagination? You can also get a pint of real ale and craft beer here too with a selection of brews from the likes of Purity, Wye Valley, Saddlers.

Head upstairs and you’ll enter Dr Jekyll’s gin parlour. As the name suggests, this is the home of The Jekyll and Hyde’s infamous gin based cocktails, created using Portobello Gin. Much like downstairs, the cocktail selection here is bountiful, each of which is inspired in someway by literature and legends. Our personal favourite has to be the “Last Word” - a mix of Gin, Maraschino and Green Chartreuse resulting in a balanced and sharp drink. Whether you’re a big fan of gin or not, there’s definitely something for you up here, and we recommend having a chat with the team if you want a bit of a hand picking the right drink for your tastes.

The outside courtyard area strays away from this Jekyll and Hyde theme. Instead, it emerges you into the story of Alice in Wonderland, with a myriad of characters painted across the walls. Much like Wonderland, this eccentric and colourful space offers a sense of escapism; it’s unique and captivating, and feels far removed from the towering buildings and busy streets of the city centre.

Immerse yourself into a different world where gin flows and vibrant cocktails reign supreme. Conquer your curiosity and step inside.
