Welcome to Birmingham’s tropical capital. Since 2006, Island Bar has been bringing our fine city a pinch of the good life with its Caribbean inspired cocktail bar.
All the fun and none of the fuss, a trip to Island Bar is as laidback as sinking into a hamper on a sun soaked beach. It’s got a ramshackle look about it with its walls and ceilings covered in a beach-themed mural smothered in an overlay of graffiti tags. With upcycled materials, oil drums and wicker chairs contributing to the bulk of the furnishings, there’s a real DIY, ‘no rules’ feel to the space that we can’t help but love.
Behind the handmade bar, a team of award-winning bartenders get to work turning out some stellar cocktails. With a seemingly endless selection of spirits in their arsenal, the Island Bar team make all your old favourites (try the Long Island Ice Tea for something proper boozy) and their own list of unique mixes (ask the team to make you their latest creation). Everything’s done with a real flair, so sit back and watch the performance: fire, juggling acts, and elaborate garnishes go into making their spot on cocktails so you’re in for a good show.
The Island team have taken big strides to make their bar a rum lovers paradise too. Their last count came to a grand total of over 70 different types of rum in their collection, making it one of the largest in the West Midlands. So with that in mind, you can expect to sip on your favourites or try something completely new in a cocktail of your choice.
At weekends, it’s no secret that this is a popular joint, and you can expect to see some familiar faces kicking back with a cocktail or two. On Friday and Saturday nights, their downstairs area picks up a party vibe, with live DJs spinning some outstanding tracks that are guaranteed to see you on your feet. Upstairs, their dedicated Tiki bar is open for all to enjoy at the weekends (but can be hired out for private functions between Sunday and Thursdays) and is the spot to head to if you fancy a cocktail in a class Tiki vessel.
You don’t need to scratch your head and wonder why Island Bar was picked up as one of the top 50 bars in the UK by the Independent. Get yourself over there for a Caribbean inspired cocktail of your wildest dreams.
