Why we love it

Slap bang in the heart of Birmingham’s shopping district, 200 Degrees’ mix of fine coffee and an extra relaxed setting provides a much needed space of refuge for when the shopping gets tough.

Inside, 200 Degrees has this old-fashioned industrial look. It’s walls, boasting dark wood panelling and exposed bronze brickwork, tower over diners hunched over cups of coffee on vintage furniture and cushioned benches. Overhead, rustic and robust chandeliers sit proud, working in unison with a plethora of low-hanging lampshades to illuminate the space in a warm orange glow. It’s an impressive looking hangout with a some-what unfussy elegant charm about it; cosy and welcoming, it’s the ideal setting to slip away from your desk for a flat white and a slice of cake or two.

The coffee itself is roasted by the 200 Degrees team at their roastery in Nottingham. Working with a host of specialist importers, their green beans are the finest around; ethically sourced and with a signature Brazilian Love Affair blend that comes from 100% Rainforest Alliance Certified farms, it’s quality stuff that’s driving positive projects and supporting workers at every stage. To do the beans justice, 200 Degrees hand-roast them, monitoring the temperature and colour to stop the process at precisely the right moment to ensure the correct flavour. And they’ve nailed it; every cup of coffee offers something that hits the spot, and uses beans roasted for each unique brew. The filter coffee is smooth and fruity, creating a lighter cup that’s easy drinking. And the espresso blends are rich and rewarding, a real soul warming experience that’s best paired with a good chat with mates.

200 Degrees doesn’t scrimp on the food either, with a satisfying menu of breakfast, lunch and sweet treats. Stop by in the morning and you can start your day with an array of timeless breakfast muffins, filled croissants and freshly baked pastries. At lunch, it’s their crisp baguettes that rule the day (our favourite filling is the vibrant beetroot and hummus), but handmade sausage rolls and trios of salads also play a big role. And for those taking a day for themselves, you could do much worse than battening down the hatches at 200 Degrees and indulging in a gooey brownie or refreshing lemon drizzle cake.

You can forget those high-street chains - this is how a coffee shop should be.
