Everyone looks for something a little bit different in a pub. To some, a local is unfussy with rugged old brick work, patterned carpet and well-worn furnishings; bars packed largely with cask ales and packets of crisps. Others look for gin palaces or lengthy wine listings; polished bar tops and sophisticated snacks. And we’re not alone in these observations - it’s something that The Chequers is conscious of, and they’ve used this knowledge to create a pub that’s bound to float everyone and anyone’s boat.
Decked out with chic furniture, part of The Chequers look and feel is reminiscent of scenes you’ll find in what people would call a ‘proper pub’, with plenty of local ales (including our favourites from Bristol Beer Factory) to tickle the fancy of an old-school boozer. Whilst on the other hand, it oozes a contemporary sophistication with a modern farmhouse feel (exuberating from their choice of colour palettes and the tiled-facade of the kitchen area), exquisite gastropub menu and perfectly paired wine selection. The end result - a knock-out pub-slash-restaurant that you’ll want to spend time in.
Whilst the pub itself is a sight to behold, the real magic lies in the food offerings. A gastropub at its very core, The Chequers champions British food with a bountiful menu of seasonal dishes crafted from local ingredients. Expect to find pub classics, such as beer-battered haddock and chips, alongside delicately presented herb crusted lamb rump (found on their mains menu) and roasted wood pigeon (which we think is the ultimate starter).
Then there’s the Sunday roasts: sirloin of beef, chicken breast with pork stuffing, slow-roasted lamb shoulder, pork belly, and The Chequers’ nut roast are up for grabs every week, each served with irresistibly crispy roast potatoes, seasonal vegetables and the yorkshire pudding of your wildest dreams.
Be sure to scope out the blackboards scattered throughout the Chequers; each board is scrawled with weekly picks of wine, fizz and menu items that’ll help you make that all important decision of what you’re going for.
It’s safe to say that The Chequers pull out all the stops to ensure you have a good time; and believe us, a good time you will have.
