It’s impossible to walk past The Green Bird Cafe and not stop in for a cuppa and slice of cake; the tungsten glow from its large street-facing windows framed in a shade of winter green is a tempting sight, not to mention the stacks of cakes, teas and savoury treats you can spot within.
Balancing between the Royal Cresecent and the Circus, this independently owned cafe is focused on serving exciting, healthy and delicious food. Their breakfasts (which were awarded Bath’s best in the Bath Good Food Awards 2017) are a real highlight here, with the option of creating your own bespoke plate with an egg cooked your way (fried, poached or scrambled) and a choice of a range of freshly prepared toppings (including roasted chorizo, smoked salmon and pan-fried tomatoes). The lunch options are also winners with a plethora of freshly baked tarts, vibrant salads and seasonal soups gracing their ever-changing menus. And whilst they’re not open every evening, its well worth keeping an eye on their website to see what pop-ups they’re hosting soon; it’s a great excuse to sample some of their alcoholic drinks as well as some meticulously prepared mains.
With its display of delicate pastries and exquisite wine, The Green Bird Cafe evokes the feeling of a rural French bistro. It’s laidback and simple, yet with a degree of sophistication and elegance. They’ve made the most of every nook and cranny to create a space that feels genuinely warm and welcoming; there’s even a neat and intimate courtyard area out the back with festoon lighting webbing above a couple of small chairs and tables, maximising on the space available in this unit. One of our favourite features of the space has to be the bar, constructed with planks of timber stacked on top of the other like a giant jenga game. It looks pretty precarious but with the cakes balanced on top of it, it’s safe to assume it’s not going anywhere!
If you haven’t paid the Green Bird Cafe a visit yet, you’re obviously stronger than we are. But seriously, stop missing out and take time in your day to embrace its beautiful food and calming setting.
