Tucked under Kingsmead Square, The Dark Horse has the special power of being able to hide in plain sight. And the reward for those who discover it: exceptional cocktails in an immersive setting.
Sink into this subterranean cocktail den and you’ll immediately get a sense of the atmosphere the Dark Horse founder Louis Lewis-Smith has been inspired to create; dimly lit and full of eclectic antiques, it has an other-worldly yet old-English feel that’s both magical and exciting whilst simultaneously relaxing and homely.
Primarily, the focus here is cocktails (evident by the bar’s seemingless endless selection of spirits and liqueurs), with the team executing exceptionally crafted cocktail classics and contemporary twists. Local produce plays a big part in these cocktails with many of their spirits and liqueurs from local producers, and herbs for garnishing foraged from the bountiful hills around Bath. They also stock some impeccable English wines, and all of their beers are from breweries in the South-West
It’s not just the drinks that champion local producers. From the artwork on the wall and the aprons the staff wear, to the sound system and furniture, almost everything in the space has been made by the hands of local people. This labour of love is well worth it, with each and every detail of noticeable quality and originality.
The Dark Horse really is a real triumph of all things local and creative. The drinks, built environment and atmosphere are all on an equal footing, making it a must visit whatever the occasion.
