Why we love it

With over nine years in the game, Cafe au Lait are one of Bath’s most well known independent establishments in the city. But it’s not a reputation that’s been built on their longevity alone; it’s their dedication to making great coffee and made-to-order breakfast and lunch options that have really helped them develop a cult following with locals and tourists alike.

Spread out across two street-facing shop fronts, Cafe au Lait has a traditional shop front exterior, with large street-facing windows offering a glimpse of what’s in store. Step inside and you’ll find yourself in a much more stripped back and contemporary space than you might expect; Cafe au Lait presents its industrial light fixtures, exposed rough masonry walls, simple yet modern furniture, and part wood-panelled / part painted walls. They’ve also grown quite a houseplant collection, and greeny weaves its way throughout the entire space.

To one side, you’ll find the coffee counter with a hard-working coffee machine, rows of speciality coffees and award-winning teas, and a cabinet full of sweet bites. It’s at this station that most of the magic happens. Cafe au Lait are serious about their coffee and the team dedicate time to ensuring each order is made perfectly (just look at their latte art if you don’t believe us) and can turn their hands to all your favourite drinks. Their house coffee comes from Clifton Coffee Roasters, but you’ll also find a few guest brews in the pipeline too.

But behind the scenes, there’s even more at work. Cafe au Lait also boast a fantastic breakfast and lunch menu, made fresh onsite by their own chefs. From fluffy, triple stacked pancakes and cinnamon waffles, to beautifully present vegetarian breakfasts with avocado, poached eggs, beans, and more, there’s something for everyone to sink their teeth into. They also have some great vegan eats too, so no one has to feel left out of the fun.

When all is said and done, the passion and dedication that Cafe au Lait show in everything they do means its no surprise that they’re at the heart of Bath’s independent food and drink scene - and we expect many many great times to come.

It doesn't get much better than their homemade granola with fresh fruit toppings.
